A recent study found a strong correlation between eating a common dietary supplement in the Western diet, low exercise and physical activity.

The study continued on mice for 12 weeks. The mice were divided into two groups. Food was provided for both groups, but a higher amount of phosphate was given to rats in the first group, in proportion to that of adults in the United States. The researchers found that rats with higher phosphates spent less time on their treadmill and had less fitness than mice who had normal amounts of phosphate.

The researchers also found that rats that consumed higher amounts of phosphate had trouble with fat metabolism, and had 5,000 genes to help treat fat and cellular metabolism.

In the one-week trial, the researchers compared the physical activity of two groups of volunteers with a population of 1,600, all of whom are in good health. The researchers found that high levels of phosphates in the body are associated with a decline in the level of physical activity medium or severe, and increase the tendency to idle.

“Further studies are needed and people should be well aware of the phosphate levels in the foods they eat,” the researchers conclude.

Phosphates are added to many foods in order to enhance their taste and extend their shelf life. They are also found in processed meats, sausages, canned fish, and carbonated water.

The results of the study were published in Circulation.
